| I love trees and have long had the fantasy of crawling into the cool roots on a hot summer day. The piece evolved in layers, starting from the dark, earthy depths and rising out to the golden glitter of the leaf canopy. Someone commented that the piece is shaped like a shield. That inspired me to the title which refers to the space we need to create ourselves. The sleeping woman is a 3 dimensional figure and I used velcro to attach it to the background. I utilized many different fabrics to get the layered look I wanted: hand batiked silk, denim, netting, metallic, cottons. Techniques and materials: hand dyed fabrics, pieced,
appliqué, machine embroidery, quilted. Hangs from a rod through the back sleeve. |
